David Kwon, MD
Professor of Surgery, Section Head of HPB Surgery, Director of Minimally Invasive Liver SurgeryBorn into a diplomat’s family, David Kwon, MD, spent much of his youth living in different countries, gaining exposure to various cultures and languages, including English, French, and Spanish. He completed his medical education, residency training in general surgery, and fellowship in liver transplantation and hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgical oncology at Seoul National University in Korea.
With a strong interest in minimally invasive surgery, he pioneered a laparoscopic liver program in 2008 and later established a laparoscopic living donor program in 2013 at Samsung Medical Center—now one of the largest programs of its kind in the world.
In 2017, he moved to the U.S., first joining Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, before transitioning to Cleveland Clinic in Ohio in 2018. Currently, David Kwon, MD, serves as the Section Head of HPB Surgery and Director of Minimally Invasive Liver Surgery.
In 2019, he launched a laparoscopic donor program, which has since become one of the largest minimally invasive living donor programs in the U.S. Beyond his clinical work, he has played a key role in multiple outreach initiatives across Asia and the Americas, helping to establish living donor liver transplant and laparoscopic liver resection programs.
David Kwon, MD, has performed live surgeries in multiple countries and has operated on over 1,000 liver transplant patients—including 700 living donor liver transplants—and over 1,000 laparoscopic liver resections throughout his 15+ year career.
